Follow the path in order
Unit 1 opens with orientation, then tones → pinyin → stroke rules → first characters, then dialogue → culture → language points → vocabulary → exercises. Finish each gate before rushing ahead.
Sound before handwriting
Hear the four tones and learn pinyin rows before you obsess over perfect strokes. Recognition and pronunciation unlock listening and speaking fastest.
Treat tone marks as spelling
A missing tone mark is a different word. Say every new syllable aloud with its tone. Short daily listening beats one long cram session.
Small batches of characters
Trace a few Hanzi well rather than dumping dozens. Stroke order makes characters recognizable and easier to look up later.
Reuse what you just learned
Dialogues and vocabulary recycle the same sounds and characters. When a sentence looks hard, find the pieces you already know first.
