Register shifts in everyday talk
A
Sumimasen, ima no iikata, sukoshi kitsuku kikoemashita ka.
Sorry—did my wording just sound a bit harsh?
B
Ie, naiyou wa rikai shimashita. Tada, moo sukoshi yawarakai iimawashi da to tasukarimasu.
No, I understood. Still, a softer phrase would help.
A
Dewa, iinaoshimasu. Sakihodo no ken, kakunin sasete itadakemasu ka.
Then let me rephrase: may I confirm the earlier matter?
B
Hai, sore nara daijoobu desu.
Yes, that is fine.
A
Kansai no yuujin to wa, tame-guchi majiri de hanasu koto ga ooi n desu.
With Kansai friends I often mix in casual speech.
B
Naruhodo. Bamen ni yotte, keigo to kajoaru no kirikae ga hitsuyoo desu ne.
I see. You need to switch between keigo and casual by situation.
A
In meetings I try to state the conclusion first.
B
Ii desu ne. Tada, hantai iken mo hirou aizuchi ga aru to anshin shimasu.
Good. Still, I feel safer when backchannels show you hear disagreement too.
A
Tashika ni. Iiyodonda toki wa, eeto, shooshoo omachi kudasai, to ma o tsukurimasu.
True. When I hesitate, I buy time with “um, one moment please.”
B
Sore mo shizen na shuufuku desu.
That is natural repair too.
A
In email I keep desu/masu and polite endings.
B
Shagai-muke wa tokuni, shitsurei no nai kotoba-erabi ga daiji desu.
Especially outward-facing mail needs careful word choice.
A
Ippou de, shanai chatto wa mijikaku, kakunin shitsumon dake okuru koto mo arimasu.
On the other hand, internal chat is short—sometimes just a checking question.
B
If context is shared, that is enough.
A
Kore kara wa, kado ga tatanai iikata o ishiki shimasu.
From now on I will watch for wording that avoids friction.
B
Arigatoo gozaimasu. Otagai ni choosei shite ikimashoo.
Thank you. Let us keep adjusting together.
